The warmth of the sun

30 Apr

I love the sun. It makes me happy, cheery and bright. Therefore, I love the coming of summer. But one thing I can’t stand is the fragrance of your child’s sunscreen.

In the bubble that I wish I lived in, no child wore sunscreen. They just frolicked in the sun enjoying their Vitamin D or stuck to the shade. Because 9 times out of 10, the crap you or your nanny is lathering your kid in is CHOKING ME. I CAN’T BREATHE.

Even if you do not care a stitch about me, I know you must give a shit about your kids. Or at least you want other people to think you do. Either way, you should think twice and WAKE UP before you lather him up in Water Babies SPF 75 before sending him off to preschool.  The end cap at CVS is not the best place to be shopping for sunscreen. There’s stuff in some of those sunscreens that’s just as bad if not worse than UV rays.

Hey – good advice on the sunscreens (zinc oxide is best), but I want to be sure that people don’t forego it altogether. Take it from a former sun-worshipper turned melanoma statistic. And if folks can’t find a sunscreen they like, just stay out of the sun during peak hours. Yes, it feels good, but it can eventually kill you, too. Sad, but true.

Thanks for the WAKE UP CALL Sarah. you’re right and I definitely wouldn’t want to diminish the dangers of too much sun exposure.

My kids are like little white ghosts in the spring and summer, covered in zinc oxide based sunscreens. My biggest beef is with the fragrance inside most.

I do remember loving the smell of Hawaiian Tropic suntan OIL back in the days when we lathered ourselves up with lotion so we would get burnt. I can’t tolerate that any more and worse are the kids’ brands. They don’t event smell like the “beach.” Which I think was the original intent of the product devleopers.

Why do they fragrance sunscreens at all? It makes no sense to me.
